Introduction to Pranayama
Practice anywhere – this class is Zoom-only!
November 18 & December 2
11:00am – 12:00pm
The Sanskrit word Pranayama translates to the regulation of life force energy (prana). It involves a series of deep breathing exercises and other techniques that aim to control inhalations and exhalations, and sometimes include breath retention. The goal of Pranayama is to strengthen the connection between your body and mind.
B.K.S. Iyengar taught Pranayama as "conscious prolongation of inhalation, retention, and exhalation." According to Iyengar, "the practice of Pranayama develops a steady mind, strong willpower, and sound judgment." And who doesn't want that…?
This special series will instruct students in basic Pranayama techniques. Over the course of the series, special attention will be given to how Pranayama can be used to reduce stress and promote relaxation and mindfulness.
A 2019 study determined that 6 weeks of practicing Pranayama for 1 hour a day could have a significant effect on lung function. The practice improved multiple parameters of lung function, according to pulmonary test results. Come and get you some!
